SPONGE2020 – A sustainable and innovative drainage project, helping to mitigate the effects of climate change in the heart of Southend-on-Sea

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council is delivering the SPONGE2020 project in partnership with British, Dutch and Flemish local authorities, as part of the 2 Seas Interreg Programme, which is funded by the European Development Fund.

The purpose of the project is to improve drainage and reduce the risk of urban flooding by introducing environmentally beneficial climate change adaptation solutions, known as Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) into Southend-on-Sea.

SuDS mimic nature and manage rainfall close to where it falls. This creates improved flood risk protection, prevents pollution and reduces the burden on existing sewer systems, as well as creating green spaces and habitats for wildlife in urban areas.
